261's were set up to install a full-flow oil filter, as an alternative to the crappy bypass filters that were in common use. Also look just above the oil pan rail on the driver's side for two oil lines or pipe plugs, one above the other. If you think you have a 261, look in front of the starter for two small raised lines (Army Captain's bars) on the passenger side. Most of the later 261's had a head with the casting number ending with 850. The only thing you give up is hydraulic lifters. With a mild overbore, you can have a 270' six, which is a 15% increase in cubes for no real extra effort. I mention the 261 because it is no more expensive to build than a 235. The head with the casting number ending with 848 is the best one to use with either block it has the smallest combustion chamber. Some 1955 - 63 and All engines with 7 main bearings, printed in purple, were pirated (with permission) from I believe that someone used part numbers when making the list which are similar but different than casting number.
